Those who follow Egypt’s affairs will notice that most of those who have announced their candidacy for president are, so far, former military commanders. In fact, after the roadmap was made public on the eve of former President Muhammad Morsi’s ouster, all eyes shifted to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and its commanders. At a time when Egypt is suffering from chaos, a lack of security, the spread of “thuggery,” and misuse of the law – all of which has tempted the faint of heart to fall for bribery and corruption – military commanders are seen as best fit to lead with an iron fist and to put a lid on the chaotic situation.
