The Court of Cassation has recently developed a number of principles which crucially impact on the issue of remarriage after divorce for Coptic Orthodox Christians. The new legislation relates to the scope and nature of Christian law to be applied in such cases as personal status issues concerning Orthodox Copts, the right of a person to second marriage after divorce, and the extent of dependence of the second marriage on permission of religious leadership, represented by the existing Clerical Council.
