Jordan’s main Islamist opposition, emboldened by success in countrywide local elections, urged the government last week to widen the country’s fledgling democracy. The IAF swept to victory in extended local elections in three of the kingdom’s main cities of Irbid, Zarqa and Russeifa, where they had performed well in previous ballots. They also captured a quarter of the elected seats of the capital.
