‘Imād talks about the Coptic presence in this past Sunday's parliamentary elections, saying that five candidates won their races outright and five others are up for the run-off ballot. He says that the number of Coptic voters this year has significantly increased due to the larger number of Coptic candidates and calls by leading Coptic intellects to come out of political isolation.

‘Imād says that a number of Muslim Brotherhood candidates attempted to use churches to promote their campaigns, but were kicked out. That wasn’t the case, however, in Shubrā as a large number of churches promoted candidate Yūsuf Butrus Ghālī. A priest reportedly went to the extent of saying that Pope Shenouda III has issued direct orders for Copts to vote for Ghālī. Candidate Rāmī Lakah was accused of buying votes for 200 EGP and a meal.

Copts also had a significant role in the upper-Egyptian governorates, ensuring that the Muslim Brotherhood lost in Minya and Asyut and forcing ‘Abd al-Rahīm al-Ghūl to the run-off ballot.
