The Jama'āh Islāmīyah requested the United States to release its leader ‘Umar ‘Abd al-Rahman who has been in a U.S. prison for 15 years, highlighting the inhuman treatment he receives, including that he was forbidden to pray.
The group called for peaceful vigils before the U.S. embassy in Cairo in order to draw attention to ultimately have 'Abd al-Rahman released.

The article "Islamist leader: Egyptian revolution achieved the impossible" reports that ‘Abd al-Rahman praised the Egyptian revolution and did not further comment on the above-mentioned protest.
The article “protests in front of U.S. embassy” reported that in response to recent protests, the U.S. embassy in Cairo issued a statement denying the alleged ill-treatment of ‘Abd al-Rahman.
Furthermore, the embassy explained once again why ‘Abd al-Rahman and others have been detained in 1993 and asked U.S. citizens in Egypt to be cautious and stay away from the embassy as well as Tahrīr Square.
