Salafists launched a campaign to boycott Coptic businessman Najīb Sawirus and his companies, including his famous cell phone operator MobiNil for drawings on his Twitter page they considered "offensive to Islam".
Sawirus offered a quick apology for the drawings which depicted Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse wearing a long beard and a niqāb (all-face veil) respectively. "I didn't mean to be sarcastic about Islam at all," he said.
However, salafists did not accept his apology.
Dr. Yāsir Burhāmī and Dr. Muhammad 'Abd al-Maqsūd, both are leading salafists, urged their supporters to be committed to this campaign in order to punish Sawirus for these "offensive drawings."
Some young people, in response, drew a picture of Sawirus depicting him as an ape, while the salafist channel of al-Hikmah published reports about the Coptic business magnet, focusing on his pro-Mubārak stances and demands to have Article 2 of the constitution removed.
