The Family Home initiative is officially underway, according to al-Misrī al-Yawm.
The paper reports that the Egypt Peace Society has convened its first conference related to the initiative, which aims to create a Muslim-Christian body to serve as a mouthpiece for both the Azhar and the Church.
However, reports in al-Shurūq al-Jadīd and al-Dustūr quote an Azhar spokesman who says that the Azhar itself had nothing to do with this meeting, claiming instead that it was a “social invitation undertaken by a group of well-intentioned people.” Instead, the spokesman says that the actual preparatory meeting for the Family Home initiative will “soon be held at the Azhar.”
Earlier this week, a report in ‘Aqīdatī claimed that ninety percent of the initiative’s proposed members are figures who would “find it difficult to blend with the Azhar, and who have customarily attacked it and its scholars.”
The Grand Imām of the Azhar, Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyib, initially proposed the idea of the Family Home.
