Egyptians against Discrimination, an advocacy group that fights discrimination among Egyptian citizens on any basis, has issued a statement that expresses solidarity with the Coptic student Bishūy Zāri' 'Abd al-Hanūn.
Bishūy is a student at South Valley University, whose Dean and Deputy Dean excluded him from being appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Arts on account of him being Christian, even though his grades more than qualify him for the position.
According to reports in Watani, the Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Abdel Fatah Hashim, issued an assignment to three of his colleagues at the university but excluded Bishuy based on personal religious beliefs, and replaced him with a graduate from the previous academic year 2008\2009 who was not listed among the candidates named by the Dean of the College.
'Alā' 'Irībī from al-Wafd newspaper is sending a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr. 'Isām Sharaf, to address the issue head-on, raising awareness of religious discrimination at a university where the majority of professors are Muslim.
