The Grand Shaykh of the Azhar Dr. Ahmad al-Tayīb denounced the attitude of the religious authority in Syria towards the 'round-the-clock "outrageous" killing of Syrians.

Tayīb met with a delegation from Syria's National Council and discussed the current situation in Syria.

Tayīb asserted that what is currently happening in Syria is a crime against humanity and should not be tolerated according to the Sharī'ah.

He also called on the Arab League and the Cooperation Council For The Arab States of The Gulf to press the Syrian regime to hand over power to the people through democratic means.
