Meanwhile, Dr. Muhammad ‘Abd al-Salām, an advisor to the Grand Shaykh of the Azhar and member of the constituent assembly, said Dr. Ahmad al-Tayīb called on the representatives of the Azhar on the panel to request the abolition of the paragraph consolidating the top Sunni institution to be the reference for the interpretation of principles of the sharī’ah as stated in Article II of the Constitution and to demand keeping the text of the 1971 Constitution unchanged.
