There are many misunderstandings surrounding the new Egyptian constitution that is based on the Shari’a. These are often caused by the media. A journalist wrote for example that in the new constitution the marital age of women is nine years. This has led to much media attention while it is definitely untrue. In order to clear these types of misunderstandings we [the Egyptian delegation] have come to The Netherlands. Dr. Amr Darrag explained this at a meeting with some members of the Coptic Church in The Netherlands and the Cairo consultation group. Dr. Amr Darrag is the general secretary of the Constitutional Assembly that has been tasked to formulate a new Egyptian Constitution. He is also a member of the party of the Muslim Brotherhood.
