The current Shūrá Council was elected in February 2012 with a turnout that was lower than 15 per cent and yielded an Islamist majority of 84 per cent of elected seats. The list of the newly appointed members includes a diverse number of Christians, some have been listed under ‘The Christian Churches’, which raised concern, for example, Nabīl 'Azmī Wāsif, who stressed saying that he is not representing the Church and that he refuses that the seats in Upper or Lower Houses are distributed according to belief as this could raise discrimination of Christian Copts in the Egyptian society. In a statement he released to the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), Azmī gave credit to opposition parties, such as the National Salvation Party, who is still refusing a dialogue who leads only to impasse. Azmī stressed on the importance of setting a national agenda that takes into consideration the demands of both sides, the Government and the Opposition.
