A meeting was held at the headquarters of the Azhar to discuss the implications of the attack on the Cathedral and the implications of the current surge in sectarian discord. The meeting, attended by members of the Egyptian Churches as well as Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyīb, the Grand Shaykh of the Azhar, linked the attack on the Cathedral to attacks on al-Azhar, in effect saying an attack on one is an attack on the other. All participants were united in confirming the need to confront attempts to divide the nation along sectarian lines, and that Muslim and Christian Egyptians are part of the social fabric of Egypt.
