A controversial figure made a surprise appearance at Saint Mark Cathedral in al-'Abbāsīyyah during the presentation of condolences to the victims of the violence. Lieutenant General  Sāmī ‘Anān, criticized for his close links to the both the Mubarak regime and the rule of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces following the dictators removal from power, greeted the Orthodox Coptic Pope Tawadros at the ceremony. He has recently been appointed to the position of advisor to the government.
