Rafīq Greish, media spokesperson for the Catholic Church in Egypt, who accompanied Pope Tawadros during his visit to the Vatican, said the idea for the meeting came about when Pope Tawadros met the Vatican ambassador to Egypt in Cairo, initiating plans for the first meeting between the two Popes since late Coptic Orthodox Pope Shenouda III met with former Vatican Pope Paul VI forty years ago. Pope Tawadros was warmly received by the Vatican, and the ninety minute meeting between the two Popes was amicable and the Coptic delegation conducted a special prayer for Pope Francis.
