Dr. Shaykh Ahmad al-Tayyīb, Grand Shaykh of the Azhar, and Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II, are on the list of the targets for murder after their participation in the meeting with political forces that announced the overthrow of President Muhammad Mursī.
Communications have been sent to the Ministers’ Cabinet for the allocation of armored cars for the two religious personnels, as well as the increase in surveillance cameras and security guards to the Azhar headquarters and Saint Mark Cathedral.
Security sources stated that also some public figures, journalists and media practitioners received threats from supporters of Islamic movements, because of their participation to the alleged coup against the government by the army’s side.
The security apparatus is currently working on the protection of these figures through the implementation of security plans, which include monitoring all their communications and electronic networks, tightening of surveillance also during conferences and meetings, and supplying with armored cars and private security guards the figures threatened with murder (Lū’ai ‘Alī and Hāzim ‘Adil, al-Yawm al-Sābi’, July 17, p. 3).
