On Wednesday evening, January 30, 2013, Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II held his first weekly sermon at Saint Mark Cathedral in al-'Abāssīyah. Pope Tawadros will hold his weekly sermon on the same day that the late Pope Shenouda III held his weekly sermons throughout his years as Pope. Different sources reveal that the sermon was limited to spiritual and religious things only. Coptic leadership has confirmed that the Church of Egypt will not intervene in politics and will limit itself only to spiritual and religious matters. 

On the other hand, a statement from the Muslim Brotherhood to a Coptic movement has described Copts as American agents. The Coptic movement said that all the victims of the latest violence across the country are true martyrs that went out with one goal, namely that of of achieving the demands of the nation. At this difficult time governing Egypt, it is important that Egypt pursues interests that will benefit the country.
