Human rights and Coptic activists condemned a ruling issued by Cairo Criminal Court, sentencing Michael ‘Adil and Michael ‘As’ad to three years in prison for stealing and possession of firearms belonging to the Armed Forces. The background to this sentence is the attack on peaceful protestors outside the Maspero TV building on 9 October 2011, in which 28 protestors were killed and tens injured. The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights called on the Prosecutor General to announce the conclusions of the fact-finding committee set up by President Mursī to investigate the deaths of protestors. It also called for investigations to be opened to examine the role of politicians and security forces in positions of responsibility during the Maspero events, particularly the leaders of the Military Police and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), as a prelude to trying them at the Criminal Court for the use of violence and violation of the protestors’ right to life (Rānīyā Nabīl, al-Sabāh, Feb. 10, p. 11). Read original text in Arabic.
