The Azhar has declared the American film ‘Noah’ unlawful due to its incarnation of one of the prophets, and stated that it will make efforts to ban the film entirely. The Azhar released a statement saying that “Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyib, Grand Imām and Shaykh of the Azhar, the Council of Senior Scholars, and the Islamic Research Institute have agreed that the film is a clear infringement of the principles of sharī’ah (Islamic law) as stipulated in the constitution”, while ‘Abbās Shūmān, representative of the Azhar, stated that the Azhar was the custodian of matters regarding religious law, irrespective of the constitution, and that its opinion should not be overlooked(Wā’il Fāyiz, al-Watan, Mar. 7, p. 3).
