Among the key components in the 2013 amendments to the Egyptian constitution is the role of religion, and few are better placed to judge than Muhammad ‘Abd al-Salām. A judge and the legal consultant to the Grand Sheikh of al-Azhar, Ahmad al-Tayyib, Salām served as one of three Azhar representatives on the Committee of Fifty. A fourth Azhari, Sa’d al-Dīn al-Hilālī, is a professor of comparative jurisprudence at the esteemed Sunni Muslim institution, though not a representative but a public figure, he noted.
