On August 12, Human Rights Watch released a 188 page report titled “All According to Plan” about the violence in Egypt in the Summer of 2013. The report concluded that the violent dispersal of the sit-ins at the Raba’a al-Adawiya and al-Nahda squares are likely “crimes against humanity.” Massive demonstrations against President Morsi prompted Minister of Defense Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to depose the president and call for an interim government. Morsi’s deposal was followed by large-scale sit-ins to protest his removal and imprisonment. I have been three times at Raba’a al-Adawiya, and on the third time, July 25, 2013, we interviewed controversial Islamist preacher Safwat Hegazy with student interns of Arab-West Report. The sit-ins were almost three weeks later forcibly removed, resulting in an estimated 1000 deaths. Human Rights Watch calls these “disproportionate and premeditated lethal attacks on overwhelmingly peaceful protesters.”  Were so many deaths needed?  Was this a crime against humanity or is that claim excessive?
