Burning the Dome: AWR Investigates Sectarian Violence in Upper Egyptian City of Edfu

Following AWR fact-finding trip to Edfu, several questions remain...

This structure, functioning as a church, was destroyed by a group of Muslim youth after a disagreement over attempts to add domes to its external architecture.

CAIRO and ASWAN (AWR) — On Friday, September 30, 2011 a structure purported to be a church was attacked and destroyed in the village of Mari-Nab, near Edfu, in the governorate of Aswan. Since then there has been much confusion in the media about what took place, with several conflicting, abbreviated or exaggerated news reports on the incident.

Arab West Report editor-in-chief Cornelis Hulsman traveled to the village with Lamis Yahya, a researcher in Coptic affairs, and conducted interviews with Muslim and Christian residents, along with security.

This preliminary report reflects notes taken and telephoned back to Cairo by Drs. Hulsman. A full report will be forthcoming following further research.
