Morsi, Shafiq to square off in second round vote, following high court ruling

CAIRO, Egypt (AWR) – The runoff election between former Mubarak Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq and Muslim Brotherhood leader Muhammad Morsi will proceed as planned this weekend, after Egypt's High Constitutional Court ruled that Shafiq is eligible to run, despite legislation banning old regime figures.

 

Thursday's ruling, which appears to have also annulled the election of at least one-third of the Islamist-dominated parliament, seems certain to anger many voters. It also all-but-confirms that Egyptians will now face the difficult task of having to choose between what many see as a return to Mubarak-style authoritarian leadership or an Islamist-dominated state.

Using the Slaughter of a Tunisian Man for Political Gain

 

Earlier this month, U.S. researcher Raymond Ibrahim sent out a news item entitled "Graphic Video: Tunisian Muslims Slaughter Convert to Christianity." Ibrahim's warning that the video is immensely graphic is certainly true, but his report appears to mislead readers about the contents of the video.

 

 

What's Behind the Mubarak Verdict?

 

 

The headlines will read, "Mubarak sentenced to life imprisonment." But they may also say, "Egyptians take to the street in protest." Confused? Unless you read more deeply, the obvious connection must be that protesters wanted his head, literally. The reality is rather simple, just not within the headlines.
