1. Inmate’s death puts Tora Prison back in spotlight

Emad Hassan, a prisoner at the Tora detention facility, died on Friday in what family members and activists have called wilful neglect by prison officials in providing adequate medical care to prisoners. The comments come in light of  a recent National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) report which gave an uncritical review of the controversial facility. A Ministry of Interior official was not available for comment at the time of publishing.

C. Hulsman: Regretfully the Ministry of Interior did not respond. Did Daily News Egypt contact the NCHR? Hassan had cancer but it appears it was first misdiagnosed and when it was clearly serious treatment was already too late. “It was his destiny but negligence was a large factor in this,” his wife told the Daily News Egypt. Would earlier treatment have saved his life? That is not so certain.
