Dr. Ibrāhīm Najm, an advisor to the Grand Muftī of Egypt, stated that in contemporary society, many are issuing fatwās (religious edicts) without referring to scholars before.  
Grand Muftī of Egypt, Dr. Naẓīr ʿAyyād, announced Dār al-Iftāʾ will, for the first time, hold an international symposium marking the International Day for Iftāʾ, under the patronage of President ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ al-Sīsī.
Grand Muftī of Egypt, Dr. Naẓīr ʿAyyād, said cooperation was in progress between al-Azhar and the Ministry of Awqāf (religious endowments) to obtain a law criminalizing fatwās issued by unaccredited scholars.
Public Prosecutor, Muḥammad Shawqī, ordered that the individual who issued a fatwā allowing for the theft of water, electricity, and gas, be referred to a criminal court on charges of disrespecting family values in Egyptian society.  
During the launch of the symposium that was held in promotion of the presidential initiative titled, 'A New Beginning to Build Egyptian Humans', under the patronage of President ʿAbd el Fattāḥ al Sīsī and hosted by Dār al-Iftāʾ, the Grand Muftī of Egypt, Dr. Naẓīr ʿAyyād said:
Under the theme “Fatwā and the Ethical Foundation in an Accelerating World,” the 9th international conference on fatwā of the Egyptian Dār al-Iftāʾ began in Cairo with the participation of representatives from over 100 countries.
Under the patronage of President ʿAbd al-Fattāḥ al-Sīsī, the 9th worldwide conference on fatwā of the Egyptian Dār al-Iftāʾ began on July 29–30 in Cairo. The conference is annually organized by the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide.
Tomorrow (Monday, July 29th), the General Secretariat of Fatwā Authorities Worldwide will hold its ninth international conference, under the auspices of President ʿAbd el Fattāḥ al-Sīsī, and the umbrella of Dār al Iftāʾ.
According to the Grand Muftī of Egypt, Dr. Shawqī ʿAllām, the majority of radical fatwas were issued by individuals who were not affiliated with reputable major scholarly institutions or the religious establishment.
Former Grand Muftī of Egypt, ʿAlī Jumʿa, stirred up controversy during an episode of his Ramaḍān program ‘Nūr el-Dīn’ that is aired on Egyptian satellite channels.
