The conflict between the Coptic and Ethiopian Churches over the ownership of the Monastery of the Sultan [dayr al-Sulṭān] that lies in the Old City of Jerusalem began in 1820 and was impacted by the situations in the two countries and involvement of other international groups, who used the issue as a pretext to achieve their goals in Africa. The issue has thus lingered and flared up during the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem, as Ethiopia refuses to compromise and is adamant on completing the second filling of the Renaissance Dam despite Egypt and Sudan’s concerns over water scarcity.
