Editor Arab-West Report: German nationals Maher Wilson and Susanne Walter have lived between 1995 and 2014 in Sīwah. Their son Mario was born here in 2000, and Lucien was born here in 2003. This was the ideal place for Maher to work on larger translation projects. Susanne was in these years fully dedicated to home schooling. They see this as the best part of their lives. “I have learned to become a human being here” Maher wrote. I understand this very well from my own experiences with people in Sīwah, who accept foreigner as if they are members of their own family. When home schooling was no longer possible, they left for Cairo, where their children were admitted in the Deutsche Evangelische Oberschule (DEO), one of the best international schools in Egypt. However they maintained their house in Sīwah, and they return there once every one or two months. Their experience contradicts claims that Sīwah would not be safe. Maher and Susanne are not the only non-Egyptians in Sīwah. There are tens of other non-Egyptians living there, and they all appreciate the hospitality and friendliness of the Sīwan population.
