Whilst speaking on an episode of his daily Ramaḍān television program, the Grand Imām of al-Azhar, Shaykh Dr. Aḥmad al-Ṭayyīb, addressed the issue of husbands beating their wives. Dr. al-Ṭayyīb emphasized that the Qurʾān does not condone such actions and instead orders men to treat their wives with compassion and kindness. He said that those trying to argue the opposite had taken Qurʾānic verses out of context and misunderstood them, and may in fact be part of Western efforts to destroy the institution of the family. He concluded by confirming that Islam encourages and, in fact, rewards just and proper treatment of a wife by her husband.
