Nine Egyptian human rights organizations including Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS), al-Nadīm Center, Egyptian Front for Human Rights (EFHR), Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms (ECRF), and the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights (ECESR) have condemned coercive measures and the ongoing mistreatment of the former Egyptian presidential candidate ʿAbd al-Munʿim Abū al-Futūḥ, who has been in prison for the past year and a half as a result of his opposition to some of the current regime’s policies.
The organizations claim the Egyptian authorities are responsible for the deterioration in his health due to consistently depriving him of treatment and necessary medical care, putting his life in serious danger. They have demanded, in a shared statement, that the authorities responsible and international bodies intervene to save Abū al-Futūḥ’s life in order to prevent a repetition of a scenario like that of the former president Muḥammad Mursī, who as a result of being denied healthcare throughout his time in prison.
