Since the overthrow of Bashār al-Assad and the Syrian Baʿath Party, many people have been feeling joyful and optimistic – not just in Syria, but across the Middle East and the rest of the world. However, this optimism has been closely followed by feelings of uncertainty about a future under new leadership. Despite attempts by the rebel groups to reassure citizens of their “new look” by conjuring up sentiments of patriotism, equality, and justice, protests resembling those which we experienced in Egypt just over ten years ago have begun to take place after only three days.
