Sermon given by Prof. Dr. Mike Reimer, teaching at the Department of History, American University in Cairo (AUC), on Orthodox Good Friday April 30, 2021, in the Anglican St. John the Baptist Church in Maadi, Cairo. This was typically the sermon of a historian. The sermon is based on the Gospel reading of Mark 15:1-26. The Old Testament reading was this day from Isaiah 52:13-53:12 and Psalm 22. The epistle reading was from Hebrews 10:1-25. This was the second celebration of Good Friday in St. John the Baptist Church. The first one was on April 2. Anglican Archbishop Mouneer Anis [Munīr Anīs] wanted a second Good Friday in solidarity with the Coptic Orthodox Church, the dominant Christian denomination in Egypt. The title of this sermon indicates a mingling of faith and politics. Cornelis Hulsman expands on this in his Arab-West Report newsletter that refers to this sermon
