The Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights (ECWR) has completely rejected the new personal status law.  In the first reading of the law, which was issued by the Egyptian Cabinet and published in al-Yawm al-Sābiʿ on February 23, the ECWR found it shocking and not appropriate for the times since it relies on more close-minded and extreme religious jurisprudence.  The law would furthermore cancel the legal person status for women and treat them as lacking legal standing.  It would also remove any rights a mother has to be involved in the lives of her children and consider her “merely a baby-making machine.”
