The case of Leslie Maras inspires the Center for Arab West Understanding (CAWU) to explore the details of the Transfer of Sentenced Persons. Mr. Maras (45) is a Belgian national who was arrested in Egypt on the 24^th of February 2006, upon his arrival on a KLM/Air France flight to Cairo International Airport, and in 2007 he was sentenced to life in prison, which is in fact 25 years, for possession of cocaine, a banned substance in Egypt. Leslie Maras had done so because he was desperate because of debts he had acquired and was misled by drugs traders to become a courier to bring drugs to Egypt in exchange for money. He now deeply regrets his reckless deeds and wants to warn anyone against using and smuggling drugs.
