The article in Sout al-Umma dated May 9 is based on the response of the Monastery of Makarios to the RNSAW, 2001, week 08A, art. 26. The article states the Monastery sent the response to the RNSAW in English. This is not true. The Monastery responded in Arabic, the RNSAW translated this into English. Sout al-Umma saw the English translation and translated this back to Arabic. This Arabic text was in turn translated into English. That has caused some differences in the text. Our translator has marked these differences in bold. It is also not true that the Monastery told me that they "would give a response on the condition that it would not be published in Egypt." I asked the Monastery for a response in the RNSAW which is produced in Egypt. The Monastery never told me it should NOT be published in Egypt. I, however, did ask why the Monastery did not respond to Sout al-Umma and they responded that placing the articles about Fa’iq Boulos was an act of defamation. The monastery believed that Sout al-Umma should have consulted them BEFORE placing such articles in order to obtain their point of view BEFORE publication, not AFTER publication.
