The author queries why pro-regime writers have suddenly turned their guns on the Copts, lumping them together with the Muslim Brotherhood and Muhammad al-Barād‘ī.

"Is the reason perhaps the al-‘Umrāniyyah events, the arrest of Copts, and the Pope's seclusion?" Kamāl asks.

"We have learned that when the regime's writers are taking turns to attack something, that means instructions have been issued to commence the attack," the author suggests.

"The problem is not in trying to turn Egyptian society against one of its components, the Copts, but in the danger posed by the fact that the regime is trying to settle scores, the danger being the fire the regime has frequently lit over the years...which has become entrenched in the hearts and minds of the common people. The problem now is that the regime...has expelled the opposition from not only parliament, but from political life as a whole...leaving it with only the option of banding together and being aggressive. This is the problem facing the regime...which has therefore begun implementing its confrontational policy, even if that involves setting the nation on fire."
