On May 29, 2010, the Supreme Administrative Court obliged Pope Shenouda to allow remarriage of divorced Copts, which triggered clashes between the Coptic Orthodox Church and the judiciary.

Counselor Muhammad al-Husīn announced from the judiciary bench, “The sanctity of verdicts prevail over any other sanctities.” The Pope has already been fined 150,000 EGP for not enforcing the sentence.

The court then ordered a halt to the verdict because of a judgement by a preliminary court that the pope is not obliged to execute any verdict, since he is not a public employee.

After this, the Ministry of Justice began preparing a unified personal status law, which collided with article 111 that regulates divorce cases.
