Shaykh Jamāl Qutb, the former Chairman of the Azhar's Fatwa Committee, said the unified law regulating the construction of houses of worship was lamely drafted, criticizing lack of organization in building mosques and churches.
He cited an example of the neighborhood where he lives. "I live in an area where I hear about 14 azāns (calls for Muslim prayers) with 14 groups of worshippers, each are no more than 40 and with only 100 to 150 meters between them."
Speaking in an interview with al-Wafd newspaper, Qutb said sectarian troubles are proved to have been masterminded by the former regime and its lackeys with the help of some internal and foreign parties.
He said that if the Azhar had been vigilant, tyranny would not have reached that far and the youths would not have taken to the streets in protests on January 25, 2011, adding the Wahābī ideologies are spreading through satellite channels with money flowing from the Gulf.
