In February 2009, President Husni Mubarak approved Police Day, which comes on January 25 each year, as an official holiday for employees of the state and the Public Sector. Police Day marks the anniversary of the incident in the city of Ismailia on that same date in 1952, when 50 Egyptian policemen were killed and 80 wounded by the forces of the British occupation, after the police refused to hand over their weapons to them and evacuate the premises of the governorate administration.
