Political parties and movements denounced the “deplorable” unrest between Muslims and Christians in Dahshūr and called for forming a fact-finding commission and working on brining the displaced Coptic families back to their homes in the impoverished area.
Dr. Muhammad al-Barād’ī, a representative of the al-Dustūr (Constitution) Party, said it is a matter of urgent necessity to come up with harsh penalties against crimes of fanaticism and discrimination.
“We must admit that we have got a sectarian problem that grows harder as time goes by. We have to find a radical solution for this problem in Egypt,” said Barād’ī on his social networking website Twitter account.
‘Isām Sha’bān, a member of the Egyptian Communist Party (ECP) politburo, said the Dahshūr unrest is yet another link in a chain of violence among Egyptian citizens on a sectarian basis.
“The atmosphere of religious obsessions and fanaticism and the mediocre ways of handling this problem are behind the aggravation of the crisis,” said Sha’bān.
The Egyptian Front for Defending the Armed Forces also condemned the forced displacement of 100 Christian families out of their homes in Dahshūr and demanded a fact-finding commission that would report directly to the presidency.
