Violent clashes occurred off Virgin Mary Monastery at Jabal al-Tayr in Samallūt Township of al-Minya Governorate, between security forces and Copts from the village. Protesters threw stones at the police while the police responded with tear gas. A number of five people were arrested and two policemen injured. Dozens of protesters suffered from tear gas suffocation, and several were beaten. The dispute arose when police attempted to enforce a decision to remove refurbishments to a building in the grounds of  Virgin Mary Monastery.
