The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit has given an exclusive interview with the newspaper al-Akhbār. In the interview he said that Christians have long been part of the social and religious fabric of Egypt, and that it was in everyone’s interests to create a stable democratic system, which respected the rights of all Egyptians. Rev. Olav responded to a question about the so-called Christian exodus by saying that while the World Council of Churches support Christians all over the Middle East, Christians have migrated for the same reasons as Muslims, namely, political instability and security concerns. The General Secretary praised the character of the Egyptian Revolution, and emphasized although it is the youth who embody the hope and wishes for the future, the leaders of the Egyptian people have shown great courage and resolve in dealing with the problems faced by the country (Husnī Mīlād and Marqus ‘Adil, al-Akhbār, Apr. 24, p. 8).
