Egypt's Salafist al-Nūr Party on Wednesday, January 9, chose Yūnis Makhīyūn as its chairman in an internal party election. Makhīyūn, who won the election uncontested, replaces former Al-Nūr leader, Dr. ’Imād ’Abd Al-Ghaffūr.
"We will do what it takes to establish a country based on justice following decades of injustice," Makhīyūn declared following the announcement of his electoral victory. Further, he promised party members that he would closely cooperate with them, adding that the party's younger cadres could expect to play a larger role in party decisions and activities.
Regarding looming parliamentary elections, the newly elected chairman described the upcoming polls as "crucial," stressing that the incoming House of Representatives (the lower house of Egypt's parliament, formerly known as the People's Assembly) would represent "a revolutionary parliament." "Through the incoming assembly, we will work on amending all legislations that conflict with Islamic Law," added Makhīyūn.
Further, Makhīyūn stressed that women will play an important in Egypt’s future and that Islam, among all other constitutions in the world, grants them a privileged position.
In an address to the Copts, he stated that Copts do not need to fear the Islamic Sharī’ah, as their lives and assets will be protected by the Salafists. [Mahmud Gharīb and Ghādah al-Hillāwī, al-Misrīyūn, Jan. 10, p. 1] Read original text in Arabic
