There is much contention on the death of Mary Sāmih, who was killed Friday March 28, 2014 in ‘Ain Shams. An eye- witness who appeared on 90- Minutes TV show on al- Mihwar Egyptian Channel stated that Mary had a cross hanging in her car. She passed by a Muslim Brotherhood protest. When the protestors saw the cross, they jumped on the car covering it completely. They dragged Mary out of the car and attacked her. They so aggressively pulled her hair that some hair was removed from her scalp. He tried to intervene but was attacked himself. He added that she was stabbed twice in the neck with a knife.
Mina Majdī, Maspero Youth Union spokesman, stated that she was killed due to her identity as a Christian. He added that it reflects the feelings of hate that a segment of society holds against Copts. He demanded from the presidential candidates solutions, which are not merely said for media consumption. He further requested that an independent committee be assigned to conduct a re-autopsy on Mary’s body as well as assigning an independent judge to look into her case (Sulaymān Shafīq, al-Sabāh, April, 7, p. 9).
