Coptic intellectuals and activists have set certain conditions to be met before they give their support to a presidential candidate, be it al-Sīsī or someone else. , Jamāl As’ad, writer and intellectual, said that the Copts need a president who can unite the Egyptians and who can solve Egypt’s economic problems and fight corruption. Mina Majdī, spokesperson of the Maspero Youth Union, stated the Union is yet to support a particular candidate. He said that the Union will shortly present a document containing all of its demands – and the demands Copts in general – the prospective president should meet in order to win the votes of Egypt’s 13 million Copts. He added that the Union will not support any Islamist affiliated candidate, such as ‘Abū al-Futūh, nor anyone who was involved in killing revolutionaries. Īhāb Ramzī, former MP, said that the Copts’ most important demands include eliminating terrorism in Egypt and achieving social justice by applying the law equally to all. He added that Field Marshal al-Sīsī is the favored candidate, because he involved Pope Tawadros II, Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, in setting Egypt’s roadmap. Furthermore, within the context of this roadmap Egypt approved of a new constitution that grants Copts several new rights. Najīb Gubrā’īl, lawyer and human rights activist, said that al-Sīsi’s support comes from him being a national hero who freed Egypt from the Muslim Brotherhood.
