Many Copts who emigrated in the 1950s and 1960s are among the most vocal in accusing President Abdel Nasser of being anti-Christian. The author shows from several examples that Nasser’s policies of nationalization did not target a specific religious group. During Abdel Nasser’s period Copts were not subjected to attacks anywhere. President Nasser even went to see the apparition of the virgin in Zeitoun (1968). Due, however, to general policies and internal Coptic clashes, the Coptic Religious Council (Maglis el-Milli) was destroyed. Nevertheless, Nasser helped to build the new Coptic Cathedral in Abassiya.
