A brief overview of the Governorate of Sharqeyya and its people. It is the birth place of Ahmed ’Orabi1 and of many important notables of Egyptian society. Located at Egypt’s north-eastern frontier, it has been the only route for invading Egypt from the East since the days of the Hyksos. It has also received God’s prophets: Joseph and later Joseph’s father Jacob and his sons. Moses was also born here. The Holy Family in their journey to Egypt from Sinai passed through it too. The Islamic conquest into Egypt led by Amr Ibn Al-’Aas passed through Sharqeyya, and then it was the center point of many battles between the sultans and the rulers of Egypt giving the people of Sharqeyya many traditions and norms of an Arab nature.
