The Grand Imam of the Azhar, Dr. Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi, delivered a lecture on ijtihad [the application of the sources of Islamic law for the purpose of making an independent judgment with regards to an issue or question] before the High Council for Islamic Affairs two nights ago. Concerning insurance, he said "I am unable to say that all insurance is forbidden or that all of it is permissible."
