Readers may recall that the public discussion on church issues came about through an initiative of Pope Shenouda III, the Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark and his interviews with journalist Mahmoud Fawzī. Fawzi has since published these interviews in a series of books beginning in 1985, with the end of the Pope’s house arrest in Anbā Bishouy Monastery which was imposed after a dispute [with late President Anwar al-Sadāt] in 1981.
