Recent Shiite attacks on the sahābah and the wives of the Prophet Muhammad sparked rage amongst many Sunnī imāms and thinkers. Some imāms in mosques dedicated their Friday prayer speeches to responding to the comments. Islamic scholar Shaykh Mansūr al-Rifā‘ī ‘Ubayd called for the Ministry of Endowments to ban Egyptian Qur'ān readers from going to Iran.
