Ghazūlī begins by saying that worldwide, the separation of religion from politics and church from state is currently under pressure.

"Today, strong currents...in the West are mixing religion and politics and giving the church a growing role in public affairs; so are we to do the same?" the writer asks rhetorically.

"Revisionists have been trying for years to invent a formula that would allow us to keep pace with this Western revisionism in its reversion to the past. But that is not correct; we should not attempt to correct the mistake of the Muhammad ‘Alī dynasty of sliding into Atheist French secularism by making the mistake of sliding into...religious rule. Our only way forward is Islamic secularism that respects all religions to which Egyptians adhere," the writer concludes.
